Phad - Rajasthan

Collage of Pad paintings

Pabuji is the most popular deity hero among all the heroes of Rajasthan. He is believed to have brought the first camel to Rajasthan, which is why the Raikas (camel keepers) are the principal devotees of Pabuji. He is also known for the fullfillment of his promises.

Pabuji left his marriage ceremony incomplete to go to battle against Khinchi Javal to save the goddess, when he was ultimately killed. This painting illustrates the life of Pabuji, which is used as a backdrop against which the Nayak Bhopes sing the night away. The Bhopin (Wife of Bhope) hold a lamp in her hands while dancing to illuminate the illustration and accompany her husband in singing the ballad.
